Downtown Lakeland's First Friday festivities this week will be like all the rest in many ways. But attendees should be on the lookout for some unusual guests as they grab a bite to eat or stroll through the area's retail shops.
Zombies will invade First Friday's event this month, and these won't be just any zombies. For one, they'll be dressed in vintage fashions from Rae's Retro. Secondly, they will unite on Kentucky Avenue for a performance of the late Michael Jackson's iconic song "Thriller," complete with a Jackson impersonator.
"I think the city of Lakeland is really going to enjoy our tributeto MJ," saidRae Bartley, who organized the performance. Bartley owns Rae's Retro.
Bartley began organizing the free performance earlier this year because she thought it would be fun to ring in the Halloween season by presenting the performance during October's First Friday event, she said. When Jackson died on June 25, she thought that in addition to a fun Halloween performance, it would make an appropriate tribute.
"(Michael Jackson) has a special place in everyone's heart, and I couldn't think of a better way to remind people of what an inspirational artist he was," Bartley said. "Our dancers have worked very hard to do justice to his work."
The dancers will have stylized makeup and hair designed by Lindsey Meeks, April Larence and Tyler Sharpe of Spectrum Hair Studio in Winter Haven. Because the performance showcase fashion in addition to the "Thriller" dance and since First Friday is a family-oriented event, care was taken to ensure the performers don't look too scary for children, said Meeks, a hair stylist and makeup artist.
"We considered lots of different zombie looks, but most of the inspiration comes from the Mexican Day of the Dead look," said Meeks, referring to the holiday that honors those who have died. "It still gives the effect of the dead, but the look is decorative. We wanted the girls to look feminine and notscary."
At 7 p.m., dancers from the upcoming production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show Experience at the Polk Theatre will perform "Time Warp," followed by a contemporary ballet performance called "Dracula's Kiss," performed by Florida Dance Theatre.
The "Thriller" performance begins about 7:30 p.m. in front of J. Rowan Galleries, which is presenting the performance in cooperation with Rae's Retro.
Bartley suggested people arrive early to stake out a spot along Kentucky Avenue to watch the performances.
